![]() ![]() On lunch hour over several days I made keys for them all in this way. I used to work at an old company that had 4o or 50 desks for the people with no keys. With a little luck and patience you will soon open the lock and have a working key. As the key cuts near the correct depth, they will disappear. ![]() Do not take any cuts in any grove that you have made if fresh marks do not appear. Take out and look in the cuts you have made for fresh marks. Put the key back into the lock and repeat the above. make sure that the shoulders of the cut are angled (look at a key) or the next time you put it in the lock, it will bind on a pin or wafer and you will not be able to withdraw the key. Light cuts, no more than 10 to 15 thousands deep. Take a warding file, pipkin file, or some small file and using the edge of the file cut down right on top of each mark. These marks are made by the pins or wafers. You can open a file cabinet lock by straightening a paperclip, but make a slight curve on one of the ends. There will be anywhere from 1 to 5 marks appear. The object of this is to put small marks on the top of the key blank. By lifting the key up and down, you are slaming the key into the pins that can not move. If you lose your keys and need to get your filing cabinet opened up, this video shows just how easily it can be done. When you turn the lock to the binding position, you are clamping down on the pins in the lock and holding them in place. then reverse and hold pressure counter clockwise binding the lock and quickly lift up and down several times on the key. Turn the lock until it binds to the right, and then quickly lift up and down the back of the key while holding pressure clockwise on the key. Grab hold of the head of the key with a small pair of vicegrips. Take a fine cut file and stroke the top of the key lightly so that it is very smooth and almost polished. I have never had problems buying a couple of key blanks at the local hardware etc. If you can find one from another desk that fits, take it to the store. More than likely if its a yale, then try a Y11 key blank. If you can not get it open with homemade lockpics, then you could try to impression the lock.įirst you need to ID a key blank that fits.
